Today it is 94 degrees outside and it is just a few days after the kids got out of school! I know I may be in the minority here, but I am so excited to have the kids home for the next few months. My daughter and I love to do crafts together, but when she is in school he never had time. I am trying to get as many DIY projects completed before she heads off to her junior year in high school in August. This week, we made these Patriotic Painted Mason Jars, which make the perfect centerpiece for your BBQ, picnic or party table. They only take a few supplies and will cost you less than $15 for three of them and that includes the flowers!!

Not only do these Patriotic Painted Mason Jars make for a cute centerpiece, they can also be sued for a pencil holder, a vase or you can fill it with your favorite candy! As with many of my craft/DIY projects, you may have a lot of the supplies you need at home. If not, you can grab what you need from the craft or dollar store for under $15 and that includes the flowers. I got the mason jars at Walmart. They came in a box of 9 for $9, the acrylic paint was $.50 and the flowers were BOGO at the craft store for $5. If you want to use chalky paint, that will cost you $2.49 per bottle.

What you will need for your Patriotic Painted Mason Jars:
- (3) mason jars
- Chalky finish or acrylic paint (red, white and blue)
- Foam brushes
- Painters tape
- Sandpaper (optional for distressing)
- Spray matte finish clear coat
- Star stencil or template (printed from Internet)
Make sure your mason jars are nice and clean. Paint 3-4 coats of the white paint on your mason jars and allow to dry completely. This paint dries pretty fast, so 20 minutes or so in between coats should be fine.
Once the white paint is totally dry (I wait an hour after my last coat), you will use your painters tape to mark off the stripes on 2 of the jars. Press down nice and firm so there is no bubbles where the paint may bleed. Paint 2-3 coats of your red over the exposed white areas. Allow to dry the same amount of time as above for the white paint.
Once the blue jar has dried completely, take your star template (I printed mine on cardstock so the pint didn’t bleed through the paper) and paint white stars all over the blue jar.
If you are going to distress your Patriotic Painted Mason Jars, take your sandpaper and gently rub over the raised areas of the mason jar. I always spray a clear coat of matte spray finish to make sure the paint is not going to scrape off. You can also use the soft touch varnish, which also gives the matte look. Use your clean white cloth to buff the varnish , once it dries.
