I want you to try the new menu for yourself! One of my USA readers will win my last Chuck E. Cheese guest pass valued at $29.99! That covers one large pizza, 4 drinks and 30 tokens. Who is ready to rock out the new menu at Chuck E. Cheese?
I am excited to have been asked by The J.M. Smucker Company to share my story of our end of the summer family staycation at Dollywood’s Splash Country, which included packing several of our favorite J.M. Smucker Company products. I am not sure who was more excited for our end of the summer family day trip to one of our favorite local attractions, Dollywood’s Splash Country, me or the kids! I really enjoy spending time with my kids and love having the kids home during the summer. But, I also love being able to work in peace, which I do not get a lot of when the kids are at home! But, before we say goodbye to the summer, we always spend a day visiting one of our favorite attractions.
Tips For Saving Money At Amusement Parks
One of our family traditions is to visit Splash Country right before the kids head back to school. It is like our last hurrah before we get back to the old grindstone of work and school. I recently wrote a post, 5 Tips For Planning A Successful Summer Family Staycation On A Budget. In the post, I offered tips to save you money on your next staycation. So, it just made sense to follow-up and offer some tips for saving money at local amusement parks for your family staycation. I hope they help you as much as they did me and my family!
Arrive after 3 p.m.: If you arrive to Splash Country after 3 in the afternoon, the next day is free. This way, we get a few hours of fun before the park closes, and then a full day of fun the next day. Because we are just about an hour away, this is perfect for us.
Parking: One of the big money suckers for a local attraction can be parking fees. For the water park we are visiting, it costs $20 to park on their grounds. We found a local trolley line that drops off right in front of the entrance to Splash Country. Total round-trip bus fare for the four of us? Just $4!!
Lockers: And another money sucker! The lockers at the front of the attraction is can go anywhere from $8 to $11. We just bring a backpack filled with the bare essentials.
Food and Drinks: We make sure to pack plenty of snacks in our backpack as well as a few reusable bottles for water. Bottled water at the park is like $4 so we just fill up an empty bottle. They actually have fountains just for this reason! For snacks, I make sure I pack food that will give the kids plenty of protein to keep them fueled for the entire day. That would include lots of our favorite snacks from The J.M. Smucker Company. Where do I shop for snacks on a budget? I stop by Walmart, my “SNACKATION” destination, to stock up on go-to summer snack solutions!
Plastic Zipper Bags: Because we don’t have a locker and we don’t want to leave our valuables in our backpack, we needed somewhere to put out important stuff. For our tickets, money and I.D., we bring a plastic zip lock bag. Chris tucks it into the pocket of his swim trunks and we are good to go!
Sunscreen: Make sure you bring a small bottle of sunscreen. The last thing you want to do is forget sunscreen and either have a family of lobsters at the end of the day or paying a million bucks for a bottle at the park.
When we are heading out to Splash Country for a day of fun in the sun, we want to leave in plenty of time. The park opens at 10:00 a.m. and we try to be there right when the gates open. Before we leave the house, I make the family a nice hot breakfast to give us a nutrition packed start to our day. To keep that momentum going throughout the day, I have to make sure the snacks I chose have plenty of flavor as well as nutrition and protein. As you can see in my post, Planning An End of Summer Family Staycation & #Snackation On A Budget, we stocked up on our favorite snacks from The J.M. Smucker Company.
Both of the kids loves the grape Smucker® Uncrustables. My husband loves the Jif To Go Chocolate Silk Spread with apples, while Henry prefers the Creamy Peanut Butter Spread with celery sticks. I am a sucker for the Chocolate Jif Whips with banana slices. Caitlin scoops up the Jif Cookies ‘N Cream Flavored Hazelnut Spread with pretzel sticks.
We had the best time at Splash Country, even if we did get rained out! The weather forecast called for cloudy with 10% chance of rain. Um…we got drenched! But hey! We were already wet, so what did we care? We stayed until the lightening started and then we decided to head home. Instead of letting the rain dampen our day, we ended up having a family game and movie night with our Smucker® snacks! If we are anything, we are creative and bounce back from being thrown a curve ball! As long as we are together, we don’t care what the activity is…as long as we do it together!
I am excited to have been asked by The J.M. Smucker Company to share my tips for planning a summer family staycation, which includes using favorite J.M. Smucker Company products. It seems that I blinked and the end of summer is right here! Where in the world did the time go? With my husband working a pretty new job, we weren’t able to take a family summer vacation like we usually do. He just couldn’t get the time off work and we didn’t really have the money for the travel expense, hotels, food and attraction costs. We did take a mid-summer road trip to see my daughter, who lives about 3 hours away. I didn’t want the summer to end without doing something fun with the family. Who said you had to travel half way across the country to have a fun end of the summer trip? We decided to visit a local water park for our end of the summer family staycation. Here are my tips for planning the perfect getaway without breaking the bank!
Stay Local: Just because you don’t have the money to travel far does not mean you cannot have a good time. We are lucky to live within a few hours drive of a ton of family fun. Not only do you save a ton on travel expenses if you stay local, you get to give back to your community and be home to sleep in your own bed!
Plan Ahead: I am a list maker and follower, so I plan things weeks in advance. I will get online and research what attractions are within a 2 hour or less drive away. Once I make a list of the attractions, I sit down with my husband and the kids and we vote on where we want to go. This way, everyone is on the same page and we all had a voice in where we visit.
Food and Drinks: Another money sucker for visiting local attractions is food and drinks. One meal (burger, fries and a drink) for the four of us runs an average of $32. I can pack the kids school lunches for 2 weeks or more for that kind of money! Instead, we pack snacks and a few empty water bottles in our backpack.
Ticket Discounts: Many attractions offer discounts for the purchase of season passes. They also tend to offer discounts for larger groups (15+) as well. Check with your friends, neighbors, or your church or play group to see if they would like to go as a group. The water park we are visiting offers one complimentary ticket for each 15 paid admissions.
Choosing A Date: Deciding on the best day to visit the attraction can make a big difference. If you go during the week, the crowds are thinner, therefore, the lines are shorter. We have a child with special needs and waiting in lines can be tough for him. Also, some attractions have cheaper tickets if you visit during the week as opposed to the weekends.
When we are shopping for our snacks for our summer family staycation, I go where I can find snacks the kids want at an affordable price. For me, that would be several family favorite Smucker’s® products including Jif To Go Dippers, Uncrustables, Jif Whips, and Jif Spreads. Our favorite “Snackation” Destination? Walmart of course! At Walmart, I know I will find the largest selection of our favorite Smucker’s® products at the best price. I love the variety of snacks from Smucker’s® for our staycation “Snackation”. There is literally something for all of us to enjoy. We usually make a picnic type spread so we can all share.
By making Walmart our “Snackation” Destination, we get to eat the snacks we love while saving money. What does this mean for my family It means we have more money in our summer family staycation budget! Yay! I cannot wait to head to the water park and experience more than 23 rides and slides! We love the RiverRush, which is the world’s first water coaster! I know, right!?! Please read my post, Tips For Saving Money At Amusement Parks, and our trip to the water park.
I remember when I was growing up how adamant my mom was about our brushing our teeth. Of course, as kids, we would roll our eyes and give it a half-hearted attempt. You know how kids are! They put the smallest amount of toothpaste on their teeth and put forth the least amount of effort possible. We had out fair share of cavities and I have plenty of fillings to prove it! Fast forward 25 years to my being a parent. I hear myself saying the stuff my mom did about brushing when I was a kid. We have learned a lot since then about the steps to better dental health. With advances in periodontal and dental health, we know more about how to take care of our teeth and avoid things like bleeding and swollen gums and gingivitis. Here are just 5 steps to having a healthier smile!
5 Steps To Better Dental Health
- Examine Your Mouth: You know your mouth like no one else. You know if there is any bleeding, swelling or unusual odors coming from your mouth. If you see or smell anything out of the ordinary, you should contact your dentist immediately. If you have normal swelling or bleeding, this could be from something as simple as gingivitis or as serious as leukemia or a low platelet count.
- A Daily Dental Routine: If you have a regular routine, you can lower your risk of dental health issues by a huge margin. Using fluoride every day is key to better dental health. This holds especially true if you are pregnant, are very young or old or are taking certain medications. You can buy over the counter fluoride toothpastes, mouthwashes or rinses or your dentist can prescribe something stronger if he feels it necessary.
- Brush and Floss: We hear it, say it and know it, but don’t always do it. If you want better dental health, you must brush and floss at least twice a day. You really should do this after you eat, but realistically, not everyone will do this. If you want to make sure you are brushing your teeth as best you can, you need the right toothbrush. For me, I prefer the Aura Clean System from TAO Clean (The Art of Clean). Not only is this a brush that gets your teeth their cleanest, the base gets your brush it’s cleanest as well.
- Visit Your Dentist Regularly: For the most part, you should visit your dentist 4 times a year. At the very minimum, you should see them twice a year for better dental health. Your dentist can spot a cavity while it is no bigger than a pin prick, lesions, tooth decay or more serious problems. They have the tools and equipment to see things in your mouth you would never be able to spot with a home exam.
- Say No to Tobacco: If you chew, dip or smoke tobacco, you need to stop for a myriad of health reasons. When it comes to your mouth, continued use can lead to serious dental health problems like mouth, gum or throat cancer. At the very least, it can cause stained teeth, bad breath and lead to tooth decay.
One of the biggest detriments to having better dental health is bacteria. That is where virtually all of your poor dental health stems from. If you have icky germs and bacteria in your mouth and don’t have the right tools to get rid of them, your mouth is in danger. Did you know that those very germs and bacteria can be living in your toothbrush? I really had no idea until I received my Aura Clean System from TAO Clean. You can have the most technologically advanced toothbrush on the market, but if the head is swimming in bacteria, you are doing your mouth a huge disservice. With the Aura Clean System from TAO Clean, you get a brush that is stored brush head down in its base, which keeps it from being exposed to your bathroom environment.
Not only do you get a powerful ultrasonic toothbrush, but a innovative cleaning station as well. The brush dryer drives water off the brush head while in the base. The 360° UV-C ring light kills 99.9+% of germs all the way round the brush head and not just on the front bristles. The UV-C sterilizer runs every few hours, making darn sure the remaining 0.1% doesn’t make an appearance. The unique design causes any remaining water to fall off the brush and completely out of the system. The Aura Clean System give you a brush that is clean, dry and charged, so it is ready to give you the cleanest teeth and mouth when you need it. You can purchase the Aura Clean System from the TAO Clean website. It comes in black or white and retails for $199. The unit comes with 3 brush heads and replacements can be purchased for $29.95 for 3. The generous folks over at TAO Clean have offered my readers an exclusive 40% off. Just use KELLY40 at checkout!
What tips do you have for better dental health?
Am I the only mom on the block who is slightly freaking out about school starting? I am so not ready for this you guys! I think I feel doubly pressured because I have one in high school who is super active in her extra curricular activities and I home school a middle school child. That means I not only have to get school supplies and school clothes, but I also have to get organized as well. I need to finish purging the kids rooms and get them organized before I can start my shopping. Please tell me you are on the same page, even on the smallest level?! Here are a few great tips and ideas I used to get the kids rooms cleaned and organized:
Hacks For Organizing Kids Rooms
Instruction Manuals: I have a boy who loves building those complicated Lego sets. If I leave them laying around, we usually lose them or they get eaten by the cats. Instead, get a 3 ring binder and page protectors and you have them safe and organized.
Hanging Storage Cubes: We have a small house, so we are short on storage space. I had to get creative and hang a lot of storage cubes in the kids rooms. For Henry, I have all of his video games and DVD’s right at his fingertips. I have labeled them with my Epson Safety Kit, and Henry has no trouble putting them in their rightful place.
Playing Cards: We play a lot of cards, but after a few games, we start losing them. Pick up a handful of plastic soap containers from the Dollar Store and keep your cards snug and safe in those! >Hanging Shoe Organizers: These are great for organizing kids rooms! You can store small cars, hand held gaming systems, small plush animals (mine collected My Little Pony), action figures, and much more. Oh, and I guess you can store shoes in them too!
DIY Storage Containers: Instead of tossing those coffee or chip containers, upcycle them into cute storage for the kids. I made these cute Monster Storage Containers with coffee Pringle’s cans, scrapbook paper and glue. I made 4 of them in about 20 minutes and they cost about $3. And they make organizing kids rooms a lot more fun!
Plastic File Bins: I have a bin for each kid with hanging files. I keep their report cards, artwork, class schedules and other important papers. You can store about 5 years worth of paperwork per bin per child.
I have always been a person who labels everything. In the past, I have bought blank labels and handwritten them to fit my needs. I think the heavens opened up and the angels sang when I opened up my LabelWorks™ Safety Kit, which retails for $110. I can easily label all of the kids back-to-school supplies, clothing, backpacks, and get their rooms organized! Epson has designed this clever solution to make sure your kid’s items don’t end up mysteriously missing. I cannot count how many items I have lost over the years that would have been found had I simply labeled them. With the Epson LabelWorks™ label maker you can print names, initials, and symbols directly onto Epson’s various label options, which can then be easily added to clothing, backpacks, sports uniforms, or items for organizing kids rooms.
The Epson LabelWorks™ label makers are both durable and machine-washable, the labels ensure items make their way home while adding a unique and personal identifier to children’s belongings. I cannot tell you how much easier this LabelWorks™ Safety Kit has made my life! And, I know Caitlin will not lose her beloved Doctor Who water bottle or lunchbox! How would you like to win a LabelWorks™ Safety Kit for yourself? Epson is generously offering an additional LabelWorks™ Safety Kit to one of my USA readers! Just enter below!
I know I am not unique when I say there are times I feel completely disconnected from my husband and kids. My husband drives a truck during the week, so we don’t get to see much of him Monday through Friday. My kids are teenagers, so of course they are off doing their own thing during the week. Henry has an addiction to the Xbox, so you can find him playing with his buddies on Xbox Live. Caitlin, my nerdy girl, is usually listening to music or reading fan fiction while swinging on the hammock in the back yard. Me, you can find tethered to my laptop, working on the blog or doing my VA work. When the weekend rolls around, I am in need of some good old fashioned family bonding time. Does this happen to you? If so, please try one of these fun ways to connect with your family this weekend. Another option is to use my Summer Boredom Jar to give kids activity ideas all year round.
Cheap Ways To Connect With Your Family
- Breakfast in Bed: Who said breakfast in bed was just for mom and dad? My kids love to get into our “beg bed” and snuggle with my husband and I. We make cinnamon rolls, bacon and eggs and hashbrowns. This is a great way to connect with your family on many different levels.
- Take a Hike: We have a gorgeous hiking trail nearby and we love to take a leisurely nature walk on the weekends. We have the Great Smoky Mountains in our backyard, so this is something we do as often as possible.
- Do A DIY Project: We are a hands on family, so we like to do DIY and craft projects. Our latest accomplishment was stripping and repainting an old TV cabinet. It is now a potters bench on the deck filled with our gardening materials.
- Go Camping: Anyone can go camping at the local campgrounds, but how about just in the back yard? My son has autism, so he has this weird love hate relationship with camping. By camping in the backyard, if he gets the heebie jeebies, we can just go back in the house. As opposed to packing up the whole family if we were at a campground. In my opinion, S’more taste as delicious in our yard as they do if we make them at the local KOA!
- Read: Once kids get to a certain age, most parents stop reading aloud to their kids. Reading to someone can be very intimate and it is a great way to bond with one another. Currently, we are tackling “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.”
- Play A Game: When I was growing up, I was one of 5 kids. We had to find cheap ways to entertain ourselves. Playing games was one of our favorites. We would play freeze tag, Mother May I or Red Light, Green Light outside. If the weather is not cooperative, we hunker down and play a favorite board game like Super Scrabble or Big Boggle from Winning Moves.
I have a philosophy about buying products. Take games for instance. I can buy Super Scrabble, Big Boggle or Connect 4 Twist and Turn from any of the major retailers. But do they have the incredible customer service that Winning Moves has? Emphatically no! And the prices are comparable, so for me, I go where I am treated well, get great products and have a really nice selection. Winning Moves Games began in 1995, bringing together talents from such big wigs as Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers and they are also tight Hasbro, Inc.
They are exclusive maker of the award winning games from Milton Bradley and Parker Brothers. Winning Moves Games carries cards, to board games to puzzles. Want to win a great collection of games from Winning Moves? They are offering one of my USA readers Super Scrabble, Big Boggle and Connect 4 Twist and Turn, with a combined ARV of $75.
What is your favorite way to connect with your family?
I was sitting here watching the latest Netflix original series, Grace and Frankie, and it really impacted me. The show stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda (reunited and it feels so good!), Sam Waterson and Martin Sheen. Jane Fonda (“Grace”) and Lily Tomlin (“Frankie”) star as two women whose lives are suddenly turned upside down when their husbands reveal they are gay and leave them for each other. Both sparring partners and partners-in-crime, Grace and Frankie form an unlikely bond to face an uncertain future together and discover a new definition of “family,” with laughter, tears and plenty of mood enhancers along the way. Talk about coping with the unexpected!
As I was sitting here with the credits rolling, I could not stop thinking about how I would react if I were Grace or Frankie. Or for that matter, either of their husbands. From the POV of the men, why want to be happy and they know in doing so will hurt two people they love most in the world. When you think of how Grace and Frankie feel, their worlds have just imploded and I bet it looks like the hurt, betrayal and confusion will never go away. As you continue to watch, you will see Grace and Frankie are coping with the unexpected in their own ways.
I know it is not the same thing as finding your mate is gay, but when my husband and I went through a pretty tough situation and found ourselves coping with the unexpected. We received the diagnosis about our son’s autism and we were devastated. It felt like a ton of bricks were pressing down on top of us and we could not see any light to save our lives. We were scared, mad, confused, terrified, and just about any other emotion you would like to insert there. We knew our lives were going to change and at the time, we could not see one iota of positivity in that diagnosis. So, if something unimaginable happens to you, how do you handle it? Has anything even remotely close to this ever happened to you? How did you handle coping with the unexpected?
Of course it is normal to feel angry, sad or shocked at first. It is super important to let yourself feel those feelings. It is also normal to worry about what the future holds. That is all we could think about for weeks after we heard about Henry and his autism. We held fast to the statement, “Knowledge is power” and that got us through when we didn’t think we could go another step. But we also had stretches of time when we felt empowered and felt we were going to learn all we could about autism and kick it’s butt! Being optimistic is one of those things that you may need to “fake it until you make it,” you know? In essence, we were an emotional roller coaster! But that is ok! Ride that sucker until you feel you can ride it with your hands in the air like you just don’t care! We decided we were coping with the unexpected diagnosis of autism with humor instead of fear.
I think the big thing when coping with the unexpected is you need to handle whatever life throws at you with grace. There will be days when you need to dig deep and get up and face the day, even when you don’t want to. I cannot count how many smiles I put on my face that were not exactly heartfelt. We avoided words like “horrible,” “never,” or “always.” Find something to be grateful for, and think of it in terms of “At least…” We did that a LOT in the beginning and it helped so much. Henry is high functioning and needed minimal outside assistance. For that we were so grateful. Try to maintain a sense of control when you feel as if your life is in an upheaval, keep a routine as much as possible. Another biggie was to remember we were not alone. We spent a lot of time with family and friends; surrounding our family with people we loved and people who loved us.
Netflix is super easy to stream and it is affordable for virtually every budget. You can stream Netflix through your TV, tablet, smartphone, gaming system or computer for less then $10 a month! You can watch your favorite shows while you are in the carpool lane, at the doctors office or while relaxing at home. Be sure to follow Netflix on Facebook and Twitter.

When my husband came home with a cell phone for my Mother’s Day gift several years ago, I was clueless. I had not used a cell phone before and had no idea how it worked, what features it had or how it would make my life easier. Little did I know this little device would become as much a part of me as my arms or legs! When we began adding different wireless devices like tablets and iPods and my new iPhone 6 from U.S. Cellular, I was again out of the loop. I was pleasantly surprised to see how every aspect of our lives can be managed by our wireless devices.
More than half of today’s wireless consumers report using smartphones as a morning alarm, to check weather forecasts and stay updated on news, according to a recent survey conducted by U.S. Cellular. Since wireless devices have become an integral part of the daily lives of consumers, there are a number of questions that people have consistently asked. Here are U.S. Cellular’s solutions to some of the most common:
What is the best way to disinfect my wireless device? The best way to keep your device free from germs, especially if you have a touch screen, is to use a screen protector like PureTek. Then, you can disinfect the protector with a simple alcohol or disinfecting spray. Pre-soaked wipes aren’t ideal as moisture can damage the device. Spray a soft cloth with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol and be sure the cloth isn’t soaking wet. Turn off your device and wipe it down. The less moisture you expose your gear to, the better. Be extra careful around the charging port and headphone adapter.
How can I make my device charge faster? The fastest way to charge your smartphone or tablet is to turn it off and plug it in. The screen needs the most power, and users often have apps that run continuously in the background. If you don’t want to turn off your device, switch to airplane mode, which will disconnect you from cellular data and Wi-Fi. You also can stop all apps running in the background and reduce screen brightness to conserve the battery.
Can my smartphone read texts and emails out loud to me? Most of the latest devices have this feature internally, and you can set voice control to your preferences. If your Android device does not have this feature, download the Voice Commands app to allow access to your phone’s core features and control system. Some hands-free driving devices, like the Jabra FREEWAY Car Kit, automatically turn on when you are in the car to enable these services.
How can I take a photo on a tablet without needing two hands to focus the photo and press the shutter? Most devices have autofocus and allow users to touch anywhere on the screen to focus the shot. Apps such as Say Cheese Camera also let you use voice control to take pictures, turn on the flash and rotate the camera view. You also can purchase remotes and tripods to take your wireless device’s photography capability to the next level.
Can my smartphone alert me to messages other than through sound or vibration? Most smartphones have LED lights that can flash different colors for emails, text messages and phone calls. On the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, users can enable the LED light flash, which will activate the device’s camera flash to signal an alert or phone call.
How can U.S. Cellular help you navigate the world of going wireless?
I received compensation, either monetary or in product, in exchange for this review. However, all opinions about this amazing product are 100% mine.
So, my son is 13 and he wants his own cell phone and I am not sure what to do. His sister has had a phone since she was his age, but the situations are completely different. She was going to school in a not so nice part of town and was busy with after school activities. I was not comfortable with her being alone with no way to contact us in case of an emergency. Hell, for that matter, in case of a teacher cutting their orchestra lesson early and leaving Caitlin there to wait 45 minutes until we picked her up. Now she is 16 and her phone is an extension of her body! I think it can safely be considered an extra appendage! She is texting, downloading, surfing, and face timing like a boss. She makes me look like a 100 year old woman using a flip phone for the first time! Now my youngest wants a phone and I am torn. Facing the same situation? Is your child ready for a cell phone? Here are 5 questions to ask your self first:
- Need: What are the circumstances surrounding your child asking for a cell phone? Do they need to stay connected to you? Do they need a way to contact you in an emergency? Are they traveling and may not be able to contact you any other way? What will they be using the phone for? Are they playing games or surfing the web for content for school?
- Respect: When trying to decide is your child ready for a cell phone, consider if your child is old enough to understand their are limits? Do they know they can only be on the phone for certain periods or time frames? Do they know using a phone is similar to using the computer, gaming system or television? If there are limits on those, so they realize there will be limits on the cell phone as well?
- Safety: Does your child realize there are apps that are safe to download and apps that are not? It takes a certain maturity level to understand this difference. Do they know who and who not to communicate with? What they should and should not share online? Do they know which words and pictures to and not to send?
- Care: Is your child ready to take responsibility for caring for their phone? Do you have a cell phone case that will keep your phone protected if your child drops it? Caitlin broke 2 screens before she finally accepted the fact that she needed a solid case. We found a great phone case from Ashley Chloe that works great for keeping Henry’s phone protected.
We chose the SPORTFIT™ Premium iPhone 6 Case in Sky Blue, which normally sells for $29.95, but is currently on sale for just $19.99! This case is both stylish and functional, which is a huge plus in my book. Henry is a pretty simple guy, so the slim and sporty design fits his esthetic perfectly. I am going to order a case for my daughter for her birthday because she is getting an iPhone 6 (Shhhhh, don’t tell!!) We are all known to be butterfingers, so knowing the cases for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have plenty of shock absorbing protection. I love the unisex appeal of the cases, which come in the PERFECTTHIN™ and the SLIMPROTECT™. You can choose from 8 great colors including Vivid Red, Bright Yellow, Tiffany Green and Elegant Black.
The case actually has a dual layer consisting of an anti-shock bumper with a durable scratch-resistant soft rubber skin paired with a hard back. This phone is not going to be slipping from your hand because it is easy to grip and hold. You can easily access your ports and buttons because these cut outs actually line up. I have had cases that were useless because the cutouts were off set from the actually openings. So frustrating! All of the cases from Ashley Chloe come with a 12 month warranty to ensure maximum protection for the life of your iPhone 6 / 6 Plus. You an purchase the cases from the Ashley Chloe website as well as through Amazon.
Thank you to the folks at Ashley Chloe for offering my readers a 30% off promo code. Just use NF5HMWU8 at checkout both on their website and Amazon. Also, one lucky reader will win on of these fun, functional and stylish cases!!
Is Your Child Ready For A Cell Phone? If so, which Ashley Chloe case would you order for them?
We all do it. You know, the little white lie. We lie to protect someone’s feelings (Honey, do I look fat in this dress?) We lie to get out of a commitment (I would love to see your vacation photos, but I have a cold/flu/broken leg/stubbed my toe.) We lie to avoid certain situations (I would love to take you to the amusement park, but they are closed on the weekends!) That last one bit me straight in the butt with my oldest daughter. I was a single parent, working as a waitress and barely making ends meet. The last thing I had money for was a day at Six Flags, but I hated to tell Chelsea, who was 6 at the time, I couldn’t afford it. So I told her they were closed. It took the heat off of me and she wasn’t harmed in the process. That is, until she found out I was lying! Apparently a child at school was very excited to be visiting Six Flags that Saturday and told Chelsea all about their plans. Chelsea told the child Six Flags was closed on the weekends and the other child told Chelsea she was full of beans. So, Chelsea asked her Dad and he promptly busted me, right there in front of my child! And we wonder why kids lie!
So, I had to come clean with my child. I felt embarrassed and ashamed and wished I had told the truth to begin with. I mean, what kind of an example was I setting for my child. Was I teaching her to avoid telling the truth? Well, no. From an early age, kids will lie. The question is why kids lie and what you should do about it. From as early as 2 or 3, toddlers will lie to get out of a diaper change or avoid taking a nap. As kids get to be 3-5, the lies become more fanciful as children at that age tend to blue the lines of reality and tell some whoppers of a tall tale. I know my kids did. This is often the age imaginary friends come into the picture and become the scapegoat for ill behavior. As kids get older, 5-9, and even into the tween years, they will begin to tell lies to get out of chores, homework or to even take the fall for someone else. With my youngest child, I have the opposite problem! He has a form of autism called Asperger’s Syndrome and he cannot tell a lie…seriously! You can read more about Henry in my post, Does Your Baby Act Differently, Know The Signs Of Sensory Processing Disorder and My Journey Living With A Child With Sensory Processing Disorder.
So we know why kids lie, but what do you do when your child lies? The best way to teach them about the truth is to lead by example. And for me, this meant explaining to Chelsea why I lied about Six Flags. You don’t go into deep details at that age about your motives, but I simply told her Mommy didn’t have the money and I was sad that I couldn’t take her, so I lied. She said maybe when we have more money, you can take me next time! Of course, when a child lies, there should be consequences to fit the age. What you don’t want to do is give the lie too much power. That just makes it too attractive and the kids will pick up on that in a heartbeat!
So, speaking of tell lies, have you seen the latest Netflix original series, Bloodline? Oh my stars, do the Rayburns have some deep dark family secrets. And trust me when I tell you, they will do just about anything to keep them from coming to the surface. The show stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and set in the Florida keys. The series follows a family caught between the ugly truth and the terrible lie that covers it up. I was hooked from the very first episode and finished the first season within 2 days (so who needs clean laundry anyway, right?!). Also on Netflix this month are plenty of programming about telling lies (and the consequences) for every age group. For the little ones, they can see Care Bears: Untruths and Consequences or Veggie Tales in the House: Lie-monade. For the older kids, they can see A.N.T. Farm: Pants on Fire or Jessie: World Wide Web of Lies. For adults, in addition to Bloodline, you can see Revenge, The Bling Ring or Pretty Little Liars.
