This post is sponsored by Ensure and I have been compensated, however, all opinions are mine. It is funny to hear myself say this, but it is true that with age comes wisdom. I hear myself regularly telling my kids things I heard my mom tell my sister and me! This is especially true about my older daughter’s health, who will be 31 soon.
My daughter and I are both on a road to be healthier. This encompasses our mind, body and spirit. We recently had a conversation about protein in our diets. As I get older, I realize what an important ingredient protein is in my life. I told her she needs to amp up her protein game, too. Here are 5 reasons we all need protein for a healthy lifestyle:
- Protein is great for your body. It is wonderful for your bones and can help you build lean muscle, increase muscle mass and increase your energy. It can also help lower your blood pressure.
- Protein can help diminish the shrinking of your muscles, which happens as we age. Pairing this with weight bearing exercise and being physically active can improve the quality of your life as you get older.
- As my daughter and I are working on losing weight, protein is a key factor to our success. When you have the correct amount of protein and the right kinds of protein in your diet, you will feel fuller for a longer period of time, increase your metabolism and have a higher rate of long term success.
- A diet with the proper amount of protein can help you keep your immune system healthy. You need that to fight off illness and disease.
- Protein helps you have healthy skin and hair!
Because protein is so important for my healthy lifestyle, I wanted to find easy ways to increase my protein intake. For me, a huge part of that is drinking Ensure Max Protein, I love that I can enjoy it over ice when I am at home or can grab a cold one on-the-go to drink while I am out and about, writing in my journal or having some “me time.” You can read more about my thoughts on Ensure Max Protein in my post, “I Found A Delicious Way To Add Extra Protein Into My Day.”
I was surprised to learn that more than 1 in 3 adults 50+ aren’t getting the protein they need daily. I wanted to make sure I was getting the correct amount of protein. We should have about 75% of the protein we take in to be a complete, high-quality protein. Ensure Max Protein gives me that and in a convenient way! You can also get high-quality protein from meats, poultry, and fish, milk and dairy products, tofu and quinoa, which many people are not including enough of in their diets.
I love a cold Ensure Max Protein for added protein. I also utilize other ways to increase my protein in my diet. I love to add protein to a salad, like grilled chicken or have some nuts with fruit for a snack. I also make sure to have protein over the course of the whole day, including meals and snacks.
Guess whose favorite actress and health advocate also drinks Ensure Max Protein? Kate Walsh! Kate Walsh can currently be seen in Netflix’s highly-acclaimed, 13 Reasons Why, as Olivia Baker. She has found that you can have good health without it being complicated. Even with her busy lifestyle, she has found simple ways to live a healthy lifestyle! She has teamed up with Abbott, the folks who make Ensure Max Protein, to help other adults kick-start their health goals with protein. Here are a few responses to a recent Q&A with Suzette Pereira, a researcher at Abbott and Kate Walsh!
Suzette, how much protein is recommended for the average adult? Is it different for a woman in her 40s or 50s?
Response from Suzette: People have likely heard that protein is good for them – but they may not know how much they should be getting in a day. For example, a person weighing 150 pounds would need roughly 54 grams of protein a day, according to the dietary recommendations. To put that in perspective, one egg has about 6g of protein. Protein is a key part of your diet at any decade, but as people age, their bodies begin to slow down their ability to break down foods and absorb nutrients. Consuming a well-balanced diet with the right amount and right kinds of protein in your 40s and 50s can make a big impact on living a healthier, more active life!
We know that Ensure Max Protein has several different benefits. What are your top 3 reasons someone should choose Ensure Max Protein versus other protein shakes?
Response from Kate: Ensure Max Protein is from a scientifically proven brand that you can trust. I can feel good knowing that my body is getting what it needs in a day, and it’s made by the experts. I love that it’s low calorie, has 1.5 grams of fat and 1 gram of sugar, but that it also has amino acids and vitamins and minerals as well. I also love the fact that Café Mocha has 100 mg of caffeine, which is as much as one cup of coffee, so in the afternoons, particularly, when I don’t want to drink another cup of coffee, I can feel energized and get my protein needs met.
Kate, have you noticed any changes in your overall health since you began using Ensure Max Protein? Do you have more energy, etc.?
Response from Kate: After turning 50 last year, I can honestly say I’m stronger than ever and feel like I’m just getting started. And I can attest, the benefits of adding protein to your diet are incredible. Beyond feeling more energized, protein plays a big role from helping with your metabolism & balance, to weight management and maintaining or rebuilding muscle mass, bone density and mental clarity.
Do you have any tips for other busy women who find it difficult to stick with a healthy lifestyle when they’re on the go?
Response from Kate: Even with our country’s obsession with protein and today’s culture of information overload, there’s clearly a major gap in our diets. But, I’ve learned that good health doesn’t have to be over complicated – you can find simple ways to make it work even with a busy lifestyle. I love that Ensure Max Protein is portable and allows me to get the protein I need on the go.
I’ve learned how important it is to slow down and prioritize my self-care routine, so now I’m much more conscious of what my body needs to stay strong and healthy – that includes things like strength training, sufficient sleep, drinking lots of water, and getting enough protein in my daily diet. But, that can be challenging as I sometimes like to eat potato chips & have been known to skip a meal when I’m busy, which is why Ensure
Max Protein is so important to me on a daily basis.
