This is a sponsored post on behalf of Netflix. I am part of their #StreamTeam. I am thankful to offer you a review of Atypical on Netflix from an autism mom. My son Henry has Asperger’s Syndrome. He is on the autism spectrum, or the spectrum for short.
Thoughts On Atypical On Netflix From An Autism Mom
Most people with Asperger’s are “high functioning.” This means he has difficulty with social interactions. He also has restricted range of interests and has certain repetitive behaviors.
You can read the background on Henry in these posts: Does Your Baby Act Differently and Our Journey With A Child With Sensory Processing Disorder.
Having A Child On The Spectrum
Living with a kid on the spectrum changes you. I am a better person and a better mom because of it. I am stronger than I ever though possible. It has not always been easy. Would I trade it? Not in a million years!
One of the hardest aspects of having a kid on the spectrum is people’s attitudes and perspectives. Some have been good, and some bad.
I learned over the years the best way to combat the naysayers was to educate them. It is frustrating because it is so damn hard to give people insight into Henry’s and our world.
When I heard of a new show, Atypical on Netflix, I was a mixed bag of emotions! I was excited, wary, skeptical and hopeful.
I was fortunate to have an advanced screening of episodes. I could not wait to get my eyeballs on that show! And it did not disappoint! I wanted to share my Thoughts On Atypical On Netflix From An Autism Mom.
It is often funny and sweet, and sometimes heart breaking. It brought a part of my life to television. It gives people a glimpse into our family dynamic, which is similar to the Gardner family! Have you seen it? If you haven’t, you should! It is Ah-Maz-Ing!
So, if you are not familiar, Atypical on Netflix follows Sam Gardner, a teen on the autism spectrum. He is a penguin loving, headphone wearing kid in high school.
His sister Casey goes to the same school. She is the star of the track team. They are like typical teen siblings much of the time. At school, Casey is Sam’s wing man of sorts.
She makes sure Sam gets his lunch money and comes to his defense when needed. Their relationship reminds me of My Henry and his sister Caitlin.
They hang out sometimes and fight sometimes. But if you mess with Henry, Caitlin is ready to kick your butt if need be!
Sam’s parents, are Elsa and Doug. They are played brilliantly by Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rappaport. What I love about Elsa is she is so much like me!
She is a stay-at-home-mom who has made her family her life. When you have a kid on the spectrum, you are also an advocate and an educator.
Relating To Your Aspie Kid
You are there for every meltdown, therapy appointment and IEP meeting at school. Strangers and family alike will question your parenting.
But in the end, you are a mom. A mom who wants the best for their kids. Doug is the dad trying to break into Elsa’s inner sanctum with Sam. He also is trying to find a place he can relate to Sam as a Dad.
Kids On The Spectrum And Friendships
Zahid is Sam’s wing man in areas related to the ladies. As he should be! They work together at an electronics store. Yes, Sam has a job. That makes me hopeful.
Henry is not ready for that, but some day I hope he will. And Sam wants to date. Again, much hope here. At 16, Henry is more interested in video games that girls. That may change. And if not, that’s OK too!
A Great Show To Watch With Your Family
One point I want to make is this is not a show about autism. It is about a mom and a dad of a teen boy and girl. One of the kids has autism. And yes, you get to see what autism looks like. To a degree. Every person on the spectrum is different.
Sam is a representative sampling of a teen guy on the spectrum. He is also representative of a teen guy. There is something for everyone in Atypical On Netflix.
You will laugh, cry, cheer and feel better for seeing the show. You will leave having a better understanding of what it is like living with autism. At least that is my hope for you!
Be sure to follow Netflix on Facebook and Twitter!

August 28, 2017 at 5:37 pmI just binge watched Atypical on Netflix with my daughter last week. I enjoyed watching this family and learning what it’s like to have a family member that is on the spectrum. I like that each member of the family had a storyline…but they all kind of centered around Sam. I hope there is another season.

August 28, 2017 at 5:39 pmI’d like to see it because the lead, Keir Gilchrist, was terrific in The United States of Tara.. Many years ago I babysat regularly a young boy on the spectrum. The highlight of everyones’ day was when he “binge watched” Disney films while mimicking every single word of dialogue and note of music w/o missing a beat.

August 28, 2017 at 8:33 pmNo I’ve not seen this on Netflix. I worked with some children with autism in a special education school after I graduated from college. I was substitute teaching in a classroom for pre kindergarten children, so the children were very young. It was interesting to see the techniques that were used during their “school” days there.

August 28, 2017 at 9:06 pmI’m pretty positive that my father has Asperger’s. Of course, they didn’t diagnose that back in the day. But he fits every criteria and had daily meltdowns when I was growing up. I’ve noticed Atypical on Netflix when I’ve scrolled through the options. I may watch it eventually, but ti’s a hard topic for me because maintaining a relationship with my dad has been so difficult. But I think that it’s great that there is so much more information out there today which I’m sure will only make you and your son stronger.

August 28, 2017 at 11:36 pmWe watch a lot on Netflix, but haven’t seen this show yet. However, two of my daughters’ friends have Asperger’s Syndrome. It’s been an experience – I hadn’t known anyone until relatively recently who had it. One thing about my girls, they make friends with everyone, so we’ve had a lot of kids around who didn’t always make friends easily. One boy even had Tourette’s Syndrome. He was a great kid and did really well on his medication, but you could always tell when it was time for another dose. Still they have all been good friends to my daughters.

August 30, 2017 at 11:30 amI have seen the show and really like it, I love Sam’s character, he is the best! Not so much the cheating mom though lol. I don’t have a child on the spectrum but do appreciate seeing a glimpse of what it’s like for this one family through the show. My 11 year old daughter started really liking it too, I think she likes seeing the typical teen interactions and at school. She laughed a lot when Sam’s ex-girlfriend slashed the giant plush penguin in front of him. I would really recommend this show, it’s really family friendly except for a few sleazy but quick parts where mom is cheating on her husband.

August 30, 2017 at 10:42 pmI have sent the promos of Atypical and they definitely looked promising. Now your review has assured me that this a good series to catch up. Like Sam, I am a penguin lover, too 🙂

August 31, 2017 at 12:58 amI have not seen Atypical yet, but it is on my Netflix to watch list. It looks interesting but I’m always weary of television/movies/media tackling mental health issues, developmental issues, etc. I’m always worried they will romanticize it somehow and lose what it’s actually like in those situations. Your review has made me feel better about it though so I will definitely watch it.

September 2, 2017 at 9:12 amI probably watched ‘Atypical’ shortly after it came out on Netflix. I went with the intention to continue watching a different series, and the advertisement was in my face. After I saw who played the parents and read about the plot, I went to check it out…and I was instantly a fan. I watched every single episode that one night, and was soooo disappointed when it was over. I think the characters are well-developed and the acting is excellent. Instead of a single character that you’re rooting for in a show, I have several. I CANNOT wait until the next season.

September 30, 2017 at 7:12 pmI have Netflix but have not seen the show. I never knew what it was about, the icon picture of the show is not impressive. I will be watching it now, since your review. As for knowing anyone with autism, my nephew is a high functional autistic. At 10 years old, he’s doing brilliantly with calculus, yet he has only let me hug him one time in 6 years. He says “show me love by talking to me. No touching. I don’t want your germs.” His Christmas wish list includes cans of Lysol and hand sanitizer. It makes me sad. I just want to hug him so bad!

April 14, 2018 at 6:43 amThanks for sharing your heart about your son and being such a proud mom. My oldest daughter just turned 5 years old. She has some unique traits about her that cannot be explained, but quick to be labeled. I struggle and I am the proudest mom too. She is on an IEP at school, and the school wants to dismiss her from it when she enters kindergarten next year. I’m glad that she has overcome many challenges, but she still needs help and may have issues that will impede her learning. It is refreshing to onnect with other moms, expecially when I feel lost. I am really excited to watch Atypical. I will probably relate to those parents and laugh and cry.
