This post contains affiliate links and/or images. Now that spring has sprung, the kids and I are getting ready for our endeavor into gardening. Last year was our first try and we had some success as well as some colossal fails! We found we planted our tomatoes and broccoli way too late and our herbs in pots too small.
This time around, we are going to plant the herbs in these cute DIY Decoupage Hanging Coffee Can Planters which we plan to keep outside. For a great DIY Spring Cleaning Hack, you should try these Homemade Dishwasher Tabs.
We have been collecting my empty coffee cans and are going to turn them into DIY Decoupage Hanging Coffee Can Planters for our herb garden. To make them cute enough to show off outside, we decided to decoupage them. If you need some gardening tips, CocaCrop.com has great information on the subject!
This is a really simple craft that only needs a few items and the kids can help too! This would also make a super cute Mother’s Day gift, so dad could help the kids instead and surprise mom!
What you’ll need to make your DIY Decoupage Hanging Coffee Can Planters:
- Empty coffee cans
- white spray paint
- Foam brushes
- Scissors
- Scrapbook paper
- Mod Podge
- Twine
- Grosgrain ribbon
- Clear coat spray or polyurethane
- Glue Gun or tacky glue
- Drill or hammer and large nail
Step One: Make sure your coffee can is clean and dry. Drill or hammer a hole in the the lip of the can, big enough for the twine to fit through. This is how you will hang your planter. Drill or hammer 4-5 holes in the bottom of the can to allow for drainage.
Step Two: Paint the outside of the can (two coats should cover it) and allow to dry completely. Next you are going to Mod Podge your scrapbook paper. Now you can do the whole can in the paper, in which case, you will need 2 sheets and you can skip the paint. Or, you can find paper with a large design you can cut and arrange on the can. Allow your Mod Podge to dry completely.
Step Three: Using your glue gun or tacky glue, carefully apply the grosgrain ribbon to the lip of the can. Allow to dry completely.
Step Four: Spray the clear coat or brush on the polyurethane and cover the entire can. I would recommend two coats. Allow to dry completely.
Step Five: Cut an 8″ piece of twine and thread into the hole in the coffee can. Tie a double knot to make sure it is totally secure. Plant your herb seeds, hang and water!
What would you plant in these cute DIY Decoupage Hanging Coffee Can Planters?

April 6, 2015 at 10:13 pmHow fun- we use single cup or K-Cup brewing pods but we reuse them as seed starters in the garden. I’m all for anything creative that re-purposes trash.
